Accepting new NDIS referrals
Meet David
Hello, I’m David Parker
Australian Psychological Society member since 1990
“My aim is simple: to offer you suitable, evidence-based therapy that helps you better manage, or resolve, whatever you are facing.”
I’m a registered psychologist and registered NDIS provider, and a former registered nurse, working with children, teens, adults and parents across South East Melbourne and by telehealth Australia-wide. My work is informed by the principles of trauma informed therapy, various aspects of psychoanalytical theory, person centred counselling practice and play therapy principles. I also work with organisations to help them manage the mental health of their employees, so their people feel more satisfied and supported at work.
Transparency
You get clear explanations of the things that matter: confidentiality, billing, reporting and how your information is stored and handled.
Optimism
I believe you have the potential to overcome many of the impasses that may be troubling you.
Excellence
An ongoing professional development program keeps my service delivery competent and current.
Three steps
How it works
I handle the parts that usually cause the headaches.
Get in touch
Call, or leave your details and I will call you back. You will speak to me, not a call centre.
A free 15 minute chat
No cost, no obligation. You describe what is going on, and I will talk to you about the way I may be able to help.
Your first session
At your home, your child’s school, or by telehealth. I handle the NDIS paperwork, invoicing and reporting.
Who I work with
How I help
I see neurotypical and neurodiverse children, teens, adults and parents,
and I provide a confidential space to assist you to talk about and reflect on what is bothering you.
Children
Poor concentration, being either bullied or a bully. Struggling to make friends, read other people, follow routines and put feelings into words are all difficulties that are worth talking about.
What I do: play therapy and counselling, at your home or your child’s school, working alongside you and the school rather than in isolation.
Teenagers
Anxiety, focus, homework and time management, screen time, self-esteem. School refusal is now one of the most common reasons families get in touch.
What I do: counselling and psychotherapy pitched at teenagers, including sessions at home when getting to an office is part of the problem.
Adults
Past or present trauma. Anxiety, self-esteem, expressing emotion, staying connected to other people, and holding on to a sense of purpose.
What I do: trauma-informed therapy and psychotherapy, in person or by telehealth, with the same psychologist every session.
Parents
Feeling you have been inadequate rather than good enough parent. Setting limits, staying consistent, and keeping a workable relationship with your child’s school.
What I do: parent counselling, on its own or alongside your child’s sessions.
Services
What I do
Named by the problem you have, not by the therapeutic model.

Common questions
Do I need an NDIS plan to see you?
No. I see NDIS participants, private clients, and clients funded through other insurance schemes. An NDIS plan simply means your sessions are likely to be fully funded.
Which part of my NDIS plan pays for psychology?
Psychology usually sits under Capacity Building, in Improved Daily Living. If you are not sure whether it is in your plan, call me or ask your support coordinator and I can help you check.
I am self-managed or plan-managed. Can I still see you?
Yes, either way you can see me.
Do you come to my home, or to my child's school?
Both. I do mobile visits to homes, schools and workplaces across Melbourne's south eastern suburbs. For many families, particularly where school refusal or anxiety is involved, meeting at home removes the hardest part of getting started.
How does telehealth work, and is it as effective?
Sessions run by secure video call and are available anywhere in Australia. For most presentations the research shows telehealth performs comparably to face to face therapy. Where it is not the right fit, I will say so.
Can I get a Medicare rebate instead?
A patient must obtain a Mental Health Care Plan from his or her Doctor (GP) to obtain a Medicare rebate for up to 10 sessions. As this is not bulk-billed there will still be some out of pocket expenses.
How long is a session, and how many will I need?
The sessions are 50 minutes in length. It is not easy to initially determine the number of sessions, but this will be discussed in the first session.
My teenager does not want to come. What then?
That is one of the most common calls I take, and it is not a reason to give up. Options include meeting at home, starting with a parent-only session, or a short low-pressure first conversation. Call and talk it through.
What happens in the first session?
Mostly listening. I will ask what has been happening, what you have already tried, and what you want to be different. You will leave with a clear sense of what the next few sessions would look like.
Do you write reports for NDIS plan reviews?
Yes, I do write reports, which I do charge for.
